Michael Burry: 'Coiled Spring' — Passive Investing, Demographic Selling and End of Buybacks

The architect of The Big Short describes the market as a 'coiled spring' ready for a violent collapse. Three forces that inflated markets for 30 years — passive fund flows, corporate buybacks, and boomer savings — are all reversing simultaneously.

In this video, Burry explains why the current moment is different from 2008 — and potentially more dangerous.

Three Forces Reversing Simultaneously There are three independent forces that have inflated markets for 30 years. And all three are reversing at the same time.

First is the passive investing bubble. Trillions flowing into index funds have inflated every stock without fundamental analysis. When this money starts to withdraw, no one will ask "is this stock really worth it?" — they will all be sold at the same time.

Second is required minimum distributions. The baby boomer generation is entering their 70s and must make legally required withdrawals from IRA accounts. This massive demographic selling wave has just begun and will continue for a decade.

Third is the decline of buybacks. Big tech companies' buyback programs were the market's largest buyers. Rising interest burdens and regulatory pressure are shrinking these programs.

Why Is the Passive Index Fund Bubble Different? In normal bubbles, people debate the value of the asset. In the passive fund bubble, a structure exists where thousands of stocks within the index are bought without anyone analyzing them. When selling is triggered, prices are undiscovered — the downward flight will accelerate.

Bitcoin and Precious Metals Warning Burry says Bitcoin's decline is causing forced liquidation in crypto-collateralized positions, which may put short-term pressure on precious metal prices.

Scion's New Positions Exits from UnitedHealth and MercadoLibre. Entries into Molina Healthcare and SLM Corp. Defense and healthcare services exposure is being increased.
